Kickoff and Ideation!

Updated: Oct 22, 2018

Our first ever event was exciting, productive, and engaging. Here are the highlights in case you missed it.

Innovators

Our first event was well-attended by established innovators. Dr. Kris Olson, our faculty advisor and new Chief Innovation Officer for the Department of Medicine, and Jim Miller, serial entrepreneur and Executive In Residence at Partners HealthCare both contributed their perspectives and "pain points." Also present was Alex Harding, MD/MBA and former MGH internal medicine resident now in venture capital at Atlas Ventures, and Nino Mihatov, our own chief resident and cardiology fellow here at MGH.

Problem Statement

All good solutions come from good problem statements; a recent FastCompany article reiterates and expands on this . As residents immersed in clinics and a complex health system, we are privy to a host of clinical inefficiencies, many on the cusp of solution. As a group, we listed our clinical "pain points" - everyday annoyances that we all face.

As an example: we all encounter patients who do not adhere to post-discharge medications. Some patients say it’s because they didn’t know they were supposed to be taking it. Some say they felt fine, so they didn’t feel the need to take more medications. Some even say they didn’t know how and where to get the new medications. Whatever the case may be, a unifying problem statement might be: there should be a way to increase patients' adherence to post-discharge medication regimens.

Stakeholder Analysis: The 5 Ps

Problem statement is just the beginning, a stakeholder analysis helps refine our understanding of the problem. The 5Ps: Physician, Patient, Provider (hospital), Payer (insurance), and Pharmacy, are a helpful mnemonic for any healthcare startup. With this analysis, you stand a much better chance of generating a solution catered to a broadly experienced problem, also known as product market fit.

Next Steps

Once a problem is well-defined, and stakeholders identified, the process of ideation begins! Our next event will take problem statements that YOU bring and explore the process of ideation. Bring your clinical pain points and stakeholder analysis and we will help you develop your idea.
